Since i was busy most of the day on Saturday i didnt get a chance to post.
Slowly working on the backyard, got more cleaned up, its really a slow go getting trees cut up an removed.
I now have two small brush piles that will remain where they are and of course will be added to as they disappear during the break down process.
In the backyard behind me there is a old mostly dead tree that seems to be the home of what i believe is a mating pair of Flickers.. they worked for a couple of days to make a hole and start the nest making.
I see and hear them often. If they arent Flickers they are some type of woodpecker, but i have seen them close enough to id them as Flickers..
Its funny when they start drumming on a metal object and for some reason at least one of them likes to do it.
Every morning about daylight i hear the cooing of doves, seems i have at least two mated pair that have taken a real liking to my backyard and spend most of the day in it.
One pair seems to like to hang out on the top of my shed for awhile every day.
I still havent managed to find out just where they are nesting but it has to be close by.
Dont see a lot of the mockingbirds lately but i am sure they are still where they nested originally, right beside my back porch.
Looks like the resident rabbits are doing well, i see them just about every day, the young one is growing. Since this year i have only seen two i am not sure what has happened to them, still only seeing one adult and the one young one.
Still not seing the usual numbers of squirrels, seems the numbers are indeed down this year.
Starting to see a few more butterflies , still will be a little more time before i begin to see more of them. Hoping my plants get up an flower in the next couple of weeks, not much blooming right now.
Saw a praying mantis the other day ,, in the beak of a mockingbird, it was the only one i have actually seen this year so far.
Last but not least - still no hummingbirds at the feeder. With no plants up for them to feed on around here i can only guess they are elsewhere.
You sound very busy in your garden. I am as well. I hope to be finished with all the heavy lifting in a week or two. I have identified a few nests around the yard and the adjacent woods. I am always delighted to find them and take note of it, so I can come back and check on the little ones later. I know the hummingbirds are out there, but I have not seen any at the feeders either. I have read that they need more protein during nesting and so prefer more insects than nectar, but I do usually see them now and then. I look forward to watching them when they start coming to the feeders again.
ReplyDeleteHopefully our weather is going to now become stable enough to start planting, i have quite a bit being delivered this weekend that i will have to get into the ground quick.
ReplyDeleteHummers will eat soft bodied insects like knats,a banana hung in a tree will usually draw those in.
The storms and cooler weather we have been having has been really messing things up, i just now got one flower bed finished, it will be awhile before plants start coming up.
